Community Pharmacies in West Yorkshire are successfully running a number of specially commissioned pharmacy initiatives to benefit patients in their area. 37 community pharmacies in Bradford City are participating in the NHS Pharmacy First scheme, which aims to promote self-care through consultation with a local pharmacist. The Pharmacy First scheme encourages patients to visit their local pharmacist when suffering from minor ailments and easily treatable conditions. The majority of patients utilising this service have been treated for viral symptoms such as coughs, colds, sore throats and fevers. It is estimated that around 900 hours of GP time across 27 practices have been made available as a result of the initiative in Bradford City, improving access to GPs and leading to a more efficient use of the NHS.
