Following the cabinet reshuffle and the announcement that Jeremy Hunt will remain Secretary of State for Health, Pharmacy Voice has released the following statement:
Under Jeremy Hunt’s leadership, the Department of Health has spoken repeatedly of the value and contribution of community pharmacy. While the recognition of our potential is welcome, the time has come to stop speaking of untapped potential and to start releasing it, by working with the sector to agree a plan for delivering its ambition to help the NHS meet growing patient need.
With a new Government in place, and a new pharmacy Minister due to be appointed imminently, we suggest a period of quiet reflection on the massive public support and concern for the sector that has been demonstrated in recent weeks. To the Secretary of State we say: It’s time to change tack; let’s take this opportunity to develop together a more positive and progressive role for community pharmacy within an integrated health and care system.
So we look forward to working with the Secretary of State, and whoever is appointed to replace Alistair Burt, and we hope they are ambitious enough to engage in genuinely open discussions that will drive the sector forward in a way that improves access, patient care and population health outcomes.
