Rob Darracott, Chief Executive of Pharmacy Voice, commented on the recent announcement surrounding the launch of Healthy New Towns
The Healthy New Towns initiative announced by Simon Stevens this week demonstrates innovative thinking putting into action the need for radical upgrade in public health prevention stated in the Five Year Forward View.
Community pharmacies are more than dispensers of medicine, they are dispensers of health and the most accessible healthcare location in the country. As such community pharmacies should be a central element to the healthy new towns and Pharmacy Voice looks forward to understanding how they will be incorporated into the model. Several areas in the UK already have Healthy Living Pharmacy schemes where pharmacies offer a range of health prevention services such as smoking cessation and weight management which have proved to be successful in improving patient outcomes and cost effective in terms of service delivery.
